Readiness is not just knowing your abc's and 123's! (Though don’t get me wrong, that is important too!! ) Here are a few highlights about what readiness looks like and how you can help support your child.

Other skills important when entering Kindergarten:

  • Fine motor skills - Can your child hold a pencil correctly? Use scissors? Write their name?

  • Independence - Can they go to the bathroom by themselves? Open their own lunch containers? Dress themselves?

  • Social - Can your child play cooperatively? Are they able to share and take turns?

  • Emotional - Can they separate from parents? Express their feelings? Ask for help when needed?

What can you do to support your child's readiness skills?

  • Enroll your child in preschool! If old enough, send them 5 days for a full day to get them prepared for elementary school.

  • Give them opportunities to play with peers outside of school.

  • Practice playing games, taking turns, and sharing at home.

  • Talk to your child about feelings.

  • Provide opportunities to be independent and problem solve on their own.

  • Encourage fine motor and sensory play. Use play doh, legos, melty beads, Q tip painting, etc.)
