Read to your child every day!

The best thing you can do to support your child’s language and literacy skills is to read aloud to them. Every. Single. Day!

To support your child’s language development, comprehension and social emotional skills you can:

  • Ask questions as you read to promote comprehension and engage with the story

  • Make predictions about what will happen next

  • Go on a “picture walk” before your read the story and tell the story through the pictures

  • Hunt for letters

  • Find rhyming words

  • Talk about how the characters are feeling and why

  • Make connections with the text (“This part reminds me of….” and connect it to a personal experience or another book)

Reading daily will help your child:

  • Understand printed words have meaning

  • Recognize similar sounds and rhymes

  • Increase vocabulary

  • Understand stories have beginning, middle and end

  • Develop social emotional skills

  • Learn numbers, shapes, colors

  • And so much more!
