In addition to academics, there are many social and emotional skills that are important for your child to start their kindergarten year with. In order for your child to be able to learn, they have to be comfortable navigating a new environment with new teachers and friends. Having these skills will help them be successful both inside the classroom and on the recess yard. These are the highlights of skills I see many kids lacking and which are incredibly beneficial for them to have or at least work on before entering kindergarten:

Is your child able to...

  • Cooperate with peers

    • This includes sharing, taking turns, and problem solving.

  • Listen and follow directions

  • Express themselves

  • Ask for help

  • Respect adults and peers

  • Empathize with others

  • Regulate their emotions and behaviors

  • Separate easily from parents

  • Interpret others’ behaviors and emotions

  • Persevere when faced with a challenge
